Pacific Harbor Seals are the most common marine mammal in the Salish Sea. Their populations are healthy. They have pups in the Whatcom County region June through September. The pups nurse for 4 to 6 weeks, and then they are on their own. They have one pup per year. The females congregate together at “haul-outs” during the pupping season.
Pups are between 18 to 25 pounds when born, and double their weight in the first month.
Harbor Seals come in a wide variation of coloring. They are range from almost black to a cream or grey coloring, with spots.
Average size of an adult is 5 to 6 feet and 250 pounds.
